On August 12, 2016, I summited Pike’s Peak after my third attempt. It was such an awesome feeling. There is a sad ending to my story though. Getting into the truck in the trailhead, I took a bad fall and ended up in a burn center in a hospital for 2+ weeks. I am writing this from my bed. I apparently sustained a deep soft tissue injury which was not readily apparent and subsequently placing ice on the area caused me to have necrotic tissue.
I ended up having 4 surgeries, which should be the end of it, and two very large wounds. I am hoping to be able to go home this weekend but as much as that excites me, it also scares the crap out of me because I’m not sure I can take care of myself at this point.
I feel very fortunate in that it could’ve definitely been a worse situation and there are so many people who have it worse than I do. I am fortunate that I have the means to obtain treatment. I think this has broadened my scope of charity. Once I’m up on my feet, I feel like giving someway to burn victims will be on my agenda.
I will post the full trail, hike, and details on my hiking blog tammyonthetrail.com!
